Paige Satchwell on Saatchi

I was born and raised in Alexandria, Virginia. I grew up in the John Carlyle House Museum. My grandmother was the curator. When I was six-years-old my mother took me to a biker party. Her friend, Tim, was a member of the motorcycle gang. Tim introduced me to the world of abstract art. We sat on the sofa and drew together. He was very kind and patient. He looked at my drawings and said, “Kiddo, you have it. Go get it.”

The next time I had anything to do with art was 2006. I had to take an art class to satisfy my requirement for my bachelor’s degree in psychology. I was frustrated at my failed attempts to draw still life. My late husband, Scott, was a very talented still life artist. He helped me with my take home assignments. After my drawing class was over we continued to draw together.
My education is a mix of private and public schools. In 2007 I graduated with honors from SUNY Potsdam. In 2010 I graduated from Capella University with a Master’s degree in psychology. In 2009 I studied at the Swarez Contemporary Art Studio in the UK. He was my mentor. Currently I am pursuing my PhD in psychology.

My husband suddenly passed away in 2009. His death compelled me to express my emotions in a productive way. I was apprehensive about showing my work to anyone because it was so different. A friend urged me to get my paintings out there.
What began as an emotional rescue and a way to stay connected to my late husband has turned into a vibrant and dynamic career.
Every day, I am grateful that the canvas gives my emotion and creativity a place to run free, where I feel perfectly happy and where I can visual communications that touch others so powerfully.

"James"

Upon viewing James one might think, “What a mess.” However, James is strictly organized. His layers are impenetrable and suggest depth. I used two techniques with James, controlled pour and drip painting. When I completed James the first time, I continued to look at him over and over again. I wasn’t happy. I felt like he wasn’t finished. A few nights ago, I woke from a sound sleep, went to the studio and finished him. As I walked out of my studio, I looked at James and I said, “He is finished.”
James measures 24in x 20in. He is oil on canvas. He is ready to hang.

"Rubin"

Rubin measures 48in x 24in, his is oil on canvas. I used a ridiculous amount of paint. He took forever to dry! I have enjoyed using black, pink, brown and yellow oil paint. They create a very nice contrast and complement each other very well. Rubin is magnificent to view in person. I had a lot of fun painting him.

Wolfgang

Although all of my paintings are not from sketches and they are somewhat spontaneous, I have to say that Wolfgang was created from 100% spontaneity. I believe that paintings have a life of their own. Paintings convey the pulse of the artist's mind, body and soul.
Wolfgang is an expression of energy, motion and other inner forces. He is dynamic, bold and all of the things I will never be. I love this painting. Wolfgang kind of reminds me of self-inflicted body armor. Wolfgang as well as my other paintings are not just about using outlines, making shapes or setting off shapes; all of them command the entire canvas.
Wolfgang measures 40in x 30in. He is oil on canvas and ready to hang.
